At the office of Revive Plastic Surgery Institute, we want you feeling and looking your best, especially as you age!

The body changes with age, and you may start notice skin changes such as bumps or masses that may not have been there in your 20s or 30s. If you notice a roundish mass that feels soft and rubbery, it may be something called a lipoma. A lipoma is a non-cancerous tumor that is comprised of fat cells that can develop most often in people between the ages of 40 and 60. They often appear on the upper back, shoulders, arms, buttocks, thigh or calf.

There are many different types of lipomas but typically once they develop they do not change, yet may not go away on their own. Lipomas are not usually painful or dangerous. However, if you do notice this, it’s important to have your doctor take a look to make sure it is nothing harmful.

Although it is not necessary to remove these, some people do not like the way they look and want to have them removed. If you do not want to have the lipoma removed, you should see your doctor regularly to have the area monitored. Either way, the first step is to have an examination to make an official diagnosis. This may involve an x-ray or computerized tomography (CT) scan, and sometimes a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.

The removal process is called an excision where the surgeon removes the lipoma and may stich the area if needed. The lipoma excision is a quick, outpatient procedure, and you should be able to go home shortly after. Depending on the size and location of the lipoma, your doctor will talk to you about what to expect with your recovery and specific instructions for caring for the area, but typically you can return to you regular activities soon.

If you think you have a lipoma, make an appointment for a consultation and we will guide you through the diagnosis and treatment process.
