How Does Calf Implant Surgery Work?

The calf implantation process begins with an initial consultation. Dr. Askari is a board-certified plastic surgeon in Miami and will discuss your goals, the options available, and how the calf implant process works to help you choose the right path forward. Once you and Dr. Askari decide that calf implants are right for your needs, we’ll start the process.

What Are Calf Implants Made Of?

Calf implants are like breast implants in many ways. They are made of silicone for durability and help provide a look of fullness and increase the size of your calves. You can choose from different implant sizes depending on the look you’re trying to achieve and the size you want for your calves. Dr. Askari will help you understand the implication of the different shapes and sizes available to create a natural, sculpted look that you’ll love.

The Types of Calf Implant Procedures

Today, two types of calf implant procedures are used depending on your needs and goals. While they’re similar and use the same type of implants, they create different results and are suited for candidates with different needs.

Subcutaneous Calf Implants

In this less invasive aesthetic plastic surgery procedure, subcutaneous calf implants are placed just under the connective tissue between your existing calf muscle and your skin. Because it’s less invasive, you benefit from a shorter recovery time. However, there are some drawbacks here, including:

The potential to shift over time, requiring revision surgery to correct
An unnatural look to the calf
The ability to see and feel the implant under your skin

Submuscular Calf Implants

The second type of calf augmentation procedure offers a more natural look but comes with a longer recovery time and potentially more discomfort. Dr. Askari will insert one or two implants underneath your calf muscles in this situation. This provides a substantial definition for your musculature and creates shapelier calves. However, the submuscular placement does come with some tradeoffs, including:

More discomfort than with subcutaneous calf implants
A longer recovery period

Other Names for Calf Implant Surgery

While calf implant surgery is the most frequently used name for the procedure, other names can sometimes be used. These include:

Calf augmentation
Calf enhancement
Calf enlargement

The Calf Implant Process

The calf implant process is relatively brief and usually performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you will not be hospitalized. Your procedure will occur
at our state-of-the-art clinic under the expert eye of Dr. Askari. You will also go home the same day.

In most cases, the surgery requires about an hour and a half. That does not include any prep time needed or time to recover from anesthesia.

You will lie face down on a surgical table, and then Dr. Askari will make a small incision into the natural crease behind your knee. He will use advanced tools
to create a pocket between your skin and calf muscles (subcutaneous calf implants) or within the calf muscle (submuscular calf implants).

Dr. Askari has significant experience with this procedure and can navigate the network of nerves, including the sciatic nerve branch. The implant is then inserted through the incision and positioned within your calf.

Depending on your needs, he may place a small drainage tube below the incision, but not all patients require one. He will then close the incision, wrap your wound with a bandage, and then within a compression bandage. This process is then repeated on your other leg before gently rolling you face up for the recovery process

Who Is a Candidate for Calf Augmentation with Implants?

Most people are candidates for calf augmentation, although an ideal candidate is committed to building calf muscles through exercise and has a fully formed musculoskeletal system. You should not smoke, and you should have realistic expectations of the results you’ll see from the procedure. Dr. Askari takes the time to discuss the procedure, what you can expect, and how your calves will look after recovery so that you can make an informed decision about your body.

Recovery After Calf Augmentation in Miami, FL

After your calf implant procedure, you’ll recover briefly at our surgical center. When you’re released, someone must drive you home. You will be sent home wearing compression bandages to help minimize swelling and hold the implants in place. Dr. Askari will give you detailed guidance to care for the incisions and the drainage tubes (if applicable). If you have drainage tubes, they will be removed along with your stitches about two weeks after the procedure. Once the tubes/stitches have been removed, you can stop wearing the compression bandages.

During the two weeks required for healing, you must avoid exercise and stay off your feet as much as possible. You will need to take a few days off work. If you regularly stand or walk for most of your workday, you may need to take more time off work. Dr. Askari will discuss your specific situation before your implant procedure so that you can make the appropriate arrangements.
