Dr. Askari carefully opens the implant pocket and surrounding scar tissue capsule. The damaged or unwanted implant is then eased out of the pocket. This part of the surgery is done very meticulously to avoid rupturing the implant shell and spilling silicone gel or other filler into the breast tissue.
Dr. Askari examines the breast tissue and capsule layers for signs of capsular contracture. This is a common complication that causes scar tissue to tighten around the implant’s location.
If signs of capsular contracture are present after implant removal, Dr. Askari may perform a capsulectomy or capsulotomy. This involves surgically removing part or all of the scar tissue capsule to release compression on the breast area. Capsulotomy is shorter and less invasive than a full capsulectomy.
