Breast Implant Removal
(Explant) Surgery in Miami, FL
In Miami, at Revive Surgical Institute, we offer breast implant removal surgery to help women achieve their aesthetic and health goals Our board-certified reconstructive and plastic surgeon, Dr. Morad Askari, has over a decade of experience performing such operations. With advanced technologies and a patient-first approach, our practice empowers women to renew their confidence and vitality.
Breast implant removal (explantation) is a plastic surgery that aims to replace/remove breast augments that no longer satisfy the patient's needs. There are different reasons why a woman might choose to undergo this operation. Some of them include dissatisfaction with the cosmetic results of the implants, complications (like capsular contracture or implant rupture), and concerns over potential long-term health risks associated with breast implants. The augments may be replaced with new ones during the same surgery, or the patient can choose to have them removed completely. This procedure is considered a type of breast revision surgery.
The first step is to book a breast implant removal consultation with Dr. Askari to make sure that this procedure is appropriate and beneficial for the patient. During the appointment, our board-certified plastic surgeon will examine the breasts and discuss the details of the operation. It will be necessary to take some time off work for recovery and avoid smoking for at least 4 weeks before surgery. Patients are also advised to make a plan for postoperative care and stop using medications that increase bleeding risk. Dr. Askari will also provide instructions on fasting and avoiding certain vitamins and supplements.
Depending on medical history, blood tests or other screenings may be ordered to clear the candidate for surgery. The night before the operation, patients need to thoroughly wash the skin around the breasts and make sure that they have support garments. Following the surgeon's preoperative instructions minimizes complications and promotes proper healing after implant removal.
Breast implant removal surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. This means that the patient is fully asleep during the procedure. The anesthesiologist provides intravenous medications to cause a state of controlled unconsciousness. Thus, the patient feels no pain and has no awareness or memory of the procedure.
Dr. Askari makes an incision to access the implants. This is usually done around the lower part of the areola or in the original scar from the initial surgery. Sometimes, a new incision is made under the breast, around the nipple, or under the arm. The incision method depends on the implant type, placement, and surgeon’s preference.
Dr. Askari carefully opens the implant pocket and surrounding scar tissue capsule. The damaged or unwanted implant is then eased out of the pocket. This part of the surgery is done very meticulously to avoid rupturing the implant shell and spilling silicone gel or other filler into the breast tissue.
Dr. Askari examines the breast tissue and capsule layers for signs of capsular contracture. This is a common complication that causes scar tissue to tighten around the implant's location.
If signs of capsular contracture are present after implant removal, Dr. Askari may perform a capsulectomy or capsulotomy. This involves surgically removing part or all of the scar tissue capsule to release compression on the breast area. Capsulotomy is shorter and less invasive than a full capsulectomy.
After all procedures are completed, Dr. Askari rinses the implant pockets with antibiotic fluid to prevent infection. The pocket may be stitched and tightened with sutures. Finally, the doctor closes the external incisions. Surgical tape, skin adhesive, or bandages are applied to protect the closure sites as they start healing.
Breast Lift
Adding a breast lift, or mastopexy, at the time of breast explant surgery can greatly improve the appearance of that area. During a breast lift, excess skin is removed, and the tissue is reshaped to create a perkier, more youthful breast contour. The nipples and areola may also be repositioned higher on the chest wall and reduced in size.
Performing a simultaneous breast lift and explantation makes it possible to remove implants and the sagging, loose skin in one surgery. This can minimize recovery time and costs associated with separate procedures. In this way, patients can prevent an overly deflated breast appearance after surgery.
Women considering a breast lift with implant removal should discuss all options with Dr. Askari. Our surgeon will determine if a lift is recommended, which technique is the most appropriate, and how to minimize risks. Comprehensive pre-surgical planning helps to set clear expectations for the process and the results of this operation.
Breast Augmentation
Many patients choose to replace their existing breast implants with new ones during the surgery. Reasons for implant change may include the desire for larger or smaller breast size, switching to a different type (saline, silicone, or gummy bear), and defects and ruptures in old augments. The surgeon removes the old implants and replaces them with new ones in the existing pocket or creates a new one if necessary.
Another option is fat grafting using the patient's own tissue, typically from the abdomen or thighs. This is an appealing natural method to restore the lost volume from implant removal without inserting new foreign objects. The surgeon performs liposuction to collect fat tissue, which is then processed and injected into multiple areas of the breast. This can be done alone or together with a breast lift. As some grafted fat may be reabsorbed, results take time as the remaining fat integrates with breast tissue. Multiple transfer sessions may be needed for full augmentation.
Recovery from breast implant removal is usually faster and less painful compared to the original augmentation surgery if done alone. Patients return home the same day. Over the next week, it is normal to experience swelling, bruising, mild discomfort, and numbness around the breast area. Pain can be managed with prescription medications. All of the dissolvable stitches disappear within a week or two.
Patients should take at least 7 days off work and avoid strenuous activity while the incision heals. The breasts may feel tender and sore for the first 4 weeks after surgery as the skin and tissues continue to mend. Swelling can persist for several months before subsiding. Most women can resume all regular activities after about 4-6 weeks. While there may be some residual scarring on the breasts, it fades over time into thin white lines.
It is important to follow all post-operative instructions, such as wearing recommended compression garments and attending follow-up visits. Patients should inform Dr. Askari about any signs of infection, bleeding, or complications after the breast implant removal. With proper rest and care, most women experience a full recovery and become comfortable without implants.
There are many reasons why a woman may choose to have her breast implants removed. Some of them are physical, while others are psychological or related to planned pregnancy. Here are the main characteristics of candidates for this surgery:
Some women who get breast implants find over time that they are unhappy with their look or feel. The implants may make their breasts look too large or too round for their frame or personal taste. Such patients may choose to return to a more natural breast appearance.
Breast implants carry some significant risks, such as infection, rupture, and capsular contracture. Women who develop these complications need to have their augments removed. Capsular contracture (where scar tissue tightens around the implant) can be very painful and distort the appearance of the breast. Thus, removing the augment may be necessary to address this issue.
Some patients decide to have this surgery due to concerns about breast implant illness. Common symptoms of this condition include brain fog, fatigue, rash, and joint pain. Although more research is still needed, some studies have linked breast implants to an increased risk of immune system issues and certain rare cancers. Patients feeling anxious over such potential hazards may choose to remove their implants.
As women age, their breasts naturally change shape. Over time, implants may start to look or feel out of sync with the body. Their edges may become more visible with the loss of breast tissue. Thus, some patients want to remove their old implants to allow their breasts to have a more natural appearance for their age.
Another reason why women have this operation is to prepare for pregnancy and nursing. Implants can interfere with the ability to breastfeed successfully. Therefore, removing them helps to ensure that women can nurse their babies.
Breast implants, revision surgeries, and follow-up care may be expensive. Patients may decide to have their augments removed due to the financial burden of maintaining them in the long term. They can make substantial savings by foregoing MRIs, potential revision surgeries, and other procedures.
The cost of breast implant removal in Miami ranges from $5,000 to $13,000. The final price depends on the surgeon's experience, the type of anesthesia used, and the procedures that will be performed. More complex surgeries are typically more expensive. Thus, there is a significant variation in the cost of Miami breast implant removal.
The exact price will be determined during a consultation with Dr. Askari. He will evaluate the patient's needs, discuss the options available, and provide an accurate cost for the procedure.
