Liposuction, also known as "lipo," is a surgical procedure that removes unwanted fat from different areas of the body through minimal incisions. Dr. Askari uses a surgical vacuum device with a cannula (thin tube) to suction out excess fat between the skin and muscles. Lipo is not a weight loss procedure — it aims to contour near-ideal body shapes.
Liposuction is the most common plastic surgery in the United States — hundreds of thousands of patients receive it each year. By safely drawing fat out of problem zones, our experienced plastic surgeon in Miami can artfully re-contour various body parts to create a slimmer appearance.
Liposuction surgery can be performed in many places, including:
Dr. Askari uses ultrasonic-assisted and tumescent liposuction. Combined, these two techniques reduce
bleeding, swelling, and bruising. Here is a brief description of each method:
Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction (UAL) relies on ultrasound energy to break down and remove unwanted fat. Dr. Askari uses an advanced VASER® system, which includes a handpiece that emits ultrasound waves. This device is inserted through small incision... into the treatment areas. The ultrasonic vibrations liquefy fat cells, allowing the doctor to suction them out more easily. During this procedure, tumescent fluid is also injected into the target zones to numb them, constrict blood vessels, and make fat removal easier. The main benefit of UAL is that Dr. Askrai can take out unwanted fat without damaging surrounding tissues. This technique is precise, effective, and safe. Together with laser-assisted liposuction and power-assisted liposuction, UAL is at the forefront of progress in this sphere.
Dr. Askari moves the cannula through the fat layers, breaking them up with ultrasound. The vacuum suctions out fat and fluids from the target areas. This procedure allows the surgeon to create a better body contour by reducing localized fat deposits.
During a typical liposuction, a maximum of 5 liters of excess fat can be removed, which is the equivalent of 10 pounds. On average, 2-3 liters are taken out.
Once the desired amount of fat is removed, Dr. Askari closes the small incisions with a few stitches. Temporary drainage tubes may also be inserted to prevent fluid buildup. The incisions typically heal within 2-3 weeks.
Liposuction recovery may vary from one patient to another based on the number of treated areas, the amount of fat removed, their pain tolerance, and overall health. People are usually able to return to non-strenuous work within a few days. Bruising, swelling, numbness, and mild discomfort should be expected, but they typically go away within a few weeks. Compression garments, aka FAJA, are worn over the treatment sites during the recovery period to help reduce swelling and promote healing.
Patients are instructed to avoid strenuous activity for 2-4 weeks after liposuction to allow their body to restore itself. A healthy diet and exercise regimen can aid the recovery process. Lymphatic massages may also be beneficial. Follow-up appointments allow Dr. Askari to monitor the patient's progress. While final results are visible within a month, it may take 3-6 months for the full effects of liposuction to become apparent.
In recent years, technological advancements have made liposuction safer and more effective.
This surgery now provides a wide range of benefits:
Recovery time is usually fairly quick — between 1 and 4 weeks, depending on the extent of treatment. Many people return to desk jobs within a few days.
The procedure is low-risk when performed by Dr. Askari. Serious complications are exceptionally rare.
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, so the patient can get back home the same day after the operation.
